Rob and Deb Kane, Tanjenong Cottages.
We moved to Tanjenong at the beginning of 2006. When we arrived much of the property had been neglected so there was an incredible amount of work to do. Our background in house renovations helped us restore the abandoned cottages on the property, the shearers quarters and the original homestead, in keeping with both their history and the environment
We have had extensive experience with media and arts industries in Sydney and that design element is very strong in the aesthetics of all the cottages.
We are working towards making all the cottages self sustainable using solar energy and rainwater. Our third cottage will be built entirely from local materials, rock, clay, timbers etc. Our ambition is to create self sustainable systems for ourselves and our guests.
Deb grew up here with five brothers and sisters. Back then her family ran cattle and sheep on the property and much of the stock work was done on horseback, particularly helpful in country like this which is so stony and mountainous.
Deb is working toward creating a gallery to exhibit her own artwork as well as other local artists’ work
We have always had dreams of living on a piece of land and being completely nourished by it….our own animals, our own vegetables, using all natural materials and harnessing as many forms of natural energy as possible. These ideals, while being very exciting require an incredible amount of work. We have been helped by the generous efforts of over 30 wwoofas (willing workers of organic farmers assoc) These international volunteers come from all over the world and help us to create this wonderful place. It all seems to be worthwhile when we see just how much people get renewed by their visit to us. The solitary walks in the bush, the simplicity of life out here can be incredibly rejuvenating
